Outstanding Alumni

The discipline of Civil Engineering in Sun Yat-sen University has a profound historical lineage and disciplinary foundation. In 1931, Sun Yat-sen University established the Department of Civil Engineering. During the War of Resistance against Japan, it moved westward to Chengjiang, Yunnan Province. In 1952, when China’s higher education system was being restructured, the discipline of Civil Engineering in SYSU was discontinued.

In the 20 years following its foundation, a number of masters in Civil Engineering who are well-known both in China and abroad emerged from the university. The representative figures are as follows:

Wang Zhizhuo, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an expert in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing;

Chen Yongling, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a founder and pioneer of Chinese Geodesy;

Mo Bozhi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and soul of the Lingnan Architecture School;

Luo Mingyu, an educator and designer, the first dean of the South China Institute of Technology and the main constructor of the Haizhu Bridge, the Nanfang Mansion and other difficult constructions;

Zhu Fuxi, an expert in Engineering Graphics, one of the founders of Chinese Engineering Graphics;

Zhang Wanjiu, a famous expert in Bridge Engineering, a professor of the Department of Civil Engineering in Sun Yat-sen University;

Xu Bangdong, a famous expert in Railway Engineering, a pioneer in landslide prevention and control in China;

Yuan Peihuang, a national master of architectural design, a registered architect with mutual recognition between China and the United States.
